Today is National Walk to Work Day, where people across the world put their car keys/oyster card down, strap on a pair of trainers and hit the pavement early to walk all the way to their job, rather than driving. Walking to work can help reduce your risk of obesity related health conditions, as well as your impact on the environment. But what other benefits does it have?
1. Better Physical Fitness
Walking is a great form of cardio exercise that doesn’t involve sweating at the gym, and in many cases doesn’t take up much more time than your usual commute (perfect for those who often complain about not having enough time to exercise). The faster you walk the more you raise your heart rate, temperature and breathing, and so you could feel a similar benefit to running on the treadmill. This might seem obvious, but walking in trainers and comfy clothes and then changing into those high heels and power suit when you get to the office is always a good idea.
2. Reduced Environmental Impact
We all know that driving to and from work each day raises our carbon footprint significantly, and whilst taking the bus is preferable in terms of environmental impact, walking is the optimum mode of transport where your carbon footprint is concerned. Why not do some good for the planet and yourself at the same time?
3. Lower Stress Levels
Research from the University of East Anglia has found that walking to work can help us feel less stressed, as well as increasing our general wellbeing. Physical activity can release endorphins in the brain, which can positively change your mood. And knowing that you’re making your body healthier by moving around is sure to make you feel good.
4. Time to Organise Your Mind
Mornings are one of the most hectic times of the day; you’re fighting with the alarm, trying to get dressed and eat breakfast in time to make it out the door, so most days you are probably starting off on a slightly sour note. Walking to work gives you time to spend with your thoughts, enabling you to prepare yourself for the day ahead and start on the right foot.
5. Saves You Money
You’d be surprised at how much money you could save just by walking to work. The fare you’d usually spend on public transport or petrol all adds up over time, and being a little financially better off is never a bad thing. If you’re trying to raise money for a dream holiday or maybe just a new pair of shoes, why not try walking to work for a month or two and see how much you can save?
