The Bournemouth Air Festival is an annual air show held along the coast at Bournemouth, in Dorset. It features aircraft from the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, as well as civil aviation displays. The event has been going 10 years, with the inaugural event attracting over 750,000 visitors. Since then, visitor numbers have swelled to well over a million.
What’s on?
Bournemouth Air Festival has a fantastic array of aeroplanes from World War Two icons the Spitfire and Hurricane fighters and Lancaster bomber, to Cold War era supersonic jets as well as modern combat aircraft and acrobatic stunt squadrons. There’s a chance you’ll catch the Red Arrows in full glory as well as Royal Marines beach assault displays. In previous years the spectacular B17 Flying Fortress has been on show, as well as Lynx helicopter, RAF Typhoon and Vulcan. Don’t miss the acrobatic wing-walking team doing their death-defying stuff.
Over land and sea
The demonstrations take place along the sea front, over the water and over the beach, giving everyone in attendance a thrilling and immersive view of the stunning aircraft in action. There are a lot of other attractions laid on – music, amazing food stalls and of course the amusements and all the fun of the seaside on the English south coast.
Need to stay?
If you’re coming from outside the local area or want to make the most of the Air Festival, there is a good number of places to stay which will suit all budgets. Bournemouth is pretty well geared-up for tourism and boasts everything from B&Bs to guest houses and five star and boutique hotels.
