Mother’s Day falls this Sunday, which means you have the rest of the week to plan the perfect day to make her feel special. If you’re not sure what to do, or just want to try something other than the usual bouquet of flowers, look no further than our list of 5 things you can do to make your dear mum feel on top of the world this Sunday.
This is a great idea if you still live with your mum, however for obvious reasons, it’s probably best to wait until she wakes up naturally before preparing breakfast, rather than waking her up at 6am with a steaming cup of coffee. You can go all out and make a full English, or just serve up a round of toast with Mum’s spreading of choice and her favourite hot drink on the side. To make breakfast extra special, adorn the tray with some flowers and of course her card and gifts.
Some people splash out with extravagant gifts on Mother’s Day, which is great if your budget will allow, however the whole point of the day is to appreciate and celebrate your mother rather than showering her with presents. Buy her a suitable card, or go the extra mile and make one yourself, but make sure you write something meaningful inside. A simple message that is heartfelt and personal to your relationship is all you need to show Mum that you care. If you’re short for cash, chocolates, flowers and her favourite tipple should suffice for gifts.
Obviously, this depends entirely on your location and schedule, but we can’t think of a better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than to spend the day with the woman herself. Organise a shopping trip or a long walk, or maybe arrange afternoon tea or lunch – make this the day that Mum can spend doing the things she loves but can never find time for. Even if your schedule is jam-packed, setting the day aside to spend quality time with your mother is sure to make her feel special and appreciated.
Most mums tend to do the lion’s share of cooking in general, so why not give your mum the night off and cook for her? You could even rope in your dad (or mum’s partner) to help you cook her favourite meal while she relaxes and puts her feet up. For extra points, decorate the table with flowers, napkins and nice cutlery to make her feel really special. If your mum loves baking, or simply can’t let anyone else take over all of the cooking, you could make dessert together.
This might seem obvious, but we all tend to take our mums for granted, and Mother’s Day is the best way to let her know how much you love and appreciate her. Even if you can’t spend the day with her, a simple phone or Skype call to wish her a happy Mother’s Day can be just as good. And this probably goes without saying, but it doesn’t have to be Mother’s Day for you to make your mum feel special – you can do all of these things on any day of the year!
